McIlroy Seeks ‘Unfinished Business’ at Royal Portrush as Open Championship Returns

Newly crowned Masters champion Rory McIlroy is determined to secure a definitive victory at this year’s Open Championship, which returns to the historic Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland – a venue where he experienced a disappointing defeat six years prior. R&A chief executive Mark Darbon believes McIlroy possesses ‘unfinished business’ after his strong performance in 2019, stating that the Masters win has significantly heightened expectations for this summer’s event.

In 2019, McIlroy missed the cut at Dunluce Links despite a spirited second-round charge and a leaderboard position. This year’s tournament is anticipated to be the largest sporting event ever hosted in Northern Ireland, drawing an estimated 278,000 fans to the Antrim coast. The Open Championship promises a substantial economic impact for the region, projected at £213 million.

The R&A is also actively pursuing expansion of the Open Championship beyond the United Kingdom. Investigative work is underway at Portmarnock Golf Links in Dublin, with strong support from local authorities and the Irish government. Darbon expressed optimism that this ambitious project will come to fruition. Furthermore, feasibility studies are being conducted for a return to Turnberry on the Ayrshire coast in Scotland – a course previously held the Open Championship in 2009 following significant investment by Donald Trump.

Darbon highlighted the logistical and commercial challenges associated with hosting the Open at Turnberry, noting that infrastructure improvements were needed to accommodate the increased visitor numbers. He emphasized the R&A’s commitment to delivering a world-class experience, citing Portrush’s brilliant links course – renowned for its challenging conditions – as a key factor in attracting top golfers and enthusiastic fans.

The 2019 Open at Royal Portrush was remembered fondly for Shane Lowry’s historic victory, marking his first major championship. This year’s tournament is expected to build upon that success, with McIlroy leading the charge alongside other international stars.
