Greece Battles Wildfires Amidst Intense Heatwave, Forcing Evacuations

A series of devastating wildfires are tearing across Greece, prompting widespread evacuations and causing significant damage. The blazes, fueled by high winds and a relentless heatwave, have stretched firefighting resources and put lives at risk. The situation is particularly dire in regions near Athens, where residents have been forced to flee their homes as flames encroach.

Multiple Blazes Across Greece

The island of Evia is also facing a significant challenge, with a second blaze near Pissona described as “out of control.” Several villages have been left without electricity as flames have destroyed power pylons and lines. In Kythira, a third wildfire is causing widespread destruction, with residents reporting scenes of devastation. Coastguard and private boats rescued people from Limnionas beach. In Messinia, a fourth wildfire broke out, and in Crete, a fifth wildfire is raging, destroying homes.

Emergency Response and Assistance

Greek authorities are working tirelessly to combat the fires, with hundreds of firefighters, supported by helicopters and water-bombing aircraft, deployed across the affected areas. The EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated, and Greece has formally requested assistance from the EU for additional firefighting aircraft.
