Emotionally Drained Higgins Overcomes O’Connor to Advance in World Snooker Championship

Four-time World Snooker Champion John Higgins battled through significant emotional distress to secure a hard-fought 10-7 victory over Joe O’Connor and advance to the second round of the prestigious tournament at the Crucible Theatre. Higgins, turning 50 in May, faced considerable adversity leading up to the contest. His father-in-law experienced a serious illness just days before the event, leaving him deeply moved and visibly affected during the match. Speaking after his win, Higgins revealed, “I left my partner and I was in tears. That was the most emotional I have ever been today. Obviously my father-in-law wasn’t great.” He explained that he felt drained from the emotional turmoil, acknowledging a mere couple of hours’ sleep before stepping onto the green baize.

The match itself proved tense and strategic. Higgins initially faced a 5-4 deficit from Monday morning’s session but brilliantly overturned this lead to take the lead at 7-6 during the mid-session interval. Notably, he compiled only one break exceeding 50 points – a superb century in the 12th frame – demonstrating a calculated and deliberate approach rather than relying on flamboyant shots. O’Connor repeatedly created chances, but Higgins consistently defended well and secured crucial frames, including a dramatic victory in the 15th frame that propelled him to an 8-7 lead.

He then showcased his experience and precision with breaks of 114 and another half century to seal the win. Higgins will now face China’s Xiao Guodong in the second round.
