Man in Court Charged with Murder of Dundee Scientist

A 20-year-old man, Kyler Rattray from Dundee, has appeared in court charged with the murder of Dr. Fortune Gomo, a respected scientist found fatally injured in Dundee. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Lochee area of the city. Dr. Gomo, 39, was a cherished member of the community, having lived in the UK for the past decade and recently beginning her role at Scottish Water.

Dr. Gomo, originally from Mutare in eastern Zimbabwe, had a distinguished academic career, culminating in a PhD from the University of Dundee in 2022. Her brother, Regis Nyatsanza, speaking from Harare, described her as a pivotal figure in their family, often acting as a “deputy parent” to her three younger siblings. He shared the profound grief of the family, who were planning a 40th birthday celebration for Dr. Gomo in the coming weeks, a milestone that will now never be reached.

The loss has sent shockwaves through the community, both in Dundee and in Zimbabwe. Friends and colleagues remember Dr. Gomo not only for her intellectual prowess but also for her deep emotional intelligence. Angela Machonesa, a childhood friend, expressed the community’s devastation on Facebook, highlighting Dr. Gomo’s role as a source of clarity and support. “Fortune Gomo mattered. Her life mattered. Her legacy must never be forgotten,” Machonesa wrote, echoing the sentiments of many.

Floral tributes have been left at the scene in South Road, Dundee, with messages of sadness and disbelief. Collections are being organized to support Dr. Gomo’s family, underscoring the impact she had on those around her.

Professionally, Dr. Gomo was recognized as an exceptional scientist. After her doctoral studies, she focused on water-related research and recently joined Scottish Water as a senior resource planner. Simon Parsons, Director of Environment Planning at Scottish Water, commended her as a “highly valued and respected member of our team,” whose contributions were already significant. The company has offered its deepest sympathies to her family and friends.

Police Scotland has acknowledged the profound shock caused by Dr. Gomo’s death. Senior officers have engaged with community representatives to offer reassurance and support. The suspect, Kyler Rattray, was apprehended shortly after the incident. Police have stated that there is no wider threat to the public and have urged against the spread of misinformation or speculation on social media to prevent further distress to the grieving family.
