Man Found Guilty of Murder After Killing Good Samaritan at Wedding Reception

In a tragic turn of events that unfolded at a wedding reception in Sheffield, Hassan Jhangur, 25, has been found guilty of murder for deliberately driving his car into a crowd of people. The incident, which occurred in Burngreave in December 2023, resulted in the death of Chris Marriott, 46, a “Good Samaritan” who had stopped to offer assistance.

Mr. Marriott, a bystander, had approached the scene to help after Jhangur’s sister sustained injuries during an earlier altercation. In a shocking act of violence, Jhangur intentionally drove his Seat Ibiza into the assembled group. Mr. Marriott tragically died at the scene, with four others sustaining injuries in the crash. Jhangur was subsequently found guilty of murder and three counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, along with one count of wounding with intent related to those injured.

During the trial at Sheffield Crown Court, the court heard harrowing details of Jhangur’s actions. The judge, Mr. Justice Morris, informed Jhangur that he would receive a life sentence for the murder, with the minimum term to be determined at a later sentencing hearing. The judge emphasized that all sentencing options remained open for Jhangur’s father, Mohammed Jhangur, who was convicted of perverting the course of justice for hiding the knife used in a subsequent attack by his son.

Following the car crash, Jhangur escalated his violent rampage by launching a vicious knife attack on his new brother-in-law, Hasan Khan. Khan was repeatedly stabbed in the head and chest. This separate act of violence also led to a conviction for wounding with intent.

The legal proceedings have brought a measure of justice for the victims and their families, highlighting the devastating consequences of Jhangur’s actions. The case serves as a stark reminder of the impact of violence, particularly when it shatters a joyous occasion like a wedding celebration. The community of Sheffield remains reeling from the incident, with the court’s verdict offering a step towards closure.
